NAME
Paul J. Krazeise, Jr.
WHERE IS YOUR OFFICE LOCATED?
Seiller Waterman LLC, 462 South Fourth Street, Suite 2200, Louisville, KY 40202
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE.
My practice is predominantly federal, state, and local taxation, with occasional entity formation assistance provided to my tax clients as well as tax-related assistance relating to clients of our firm’s bankruptcy attorneys.
WHAT LED YOU TO A LEGAL CAREER?
As a failed engineering student out of high school (funny how it works when you are not very adept at science, such as chemistry and physics!), I had to redirect my career focus and that steered me in the direction of the law which I had also considered to be interesting and potentially rewarding.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST INTERESTING OR MEMORABLE CASE AND WHY?
During my private practice stint with Seiller Waterman, I represented a local businessman and his wife in a tax case where the IRS, upon audit and administrative appeal, proposed the disallowance of losses deducted by the clients and stemming from their ownership and competitive showing of saddlebred horses. Following a four-day trial in the United States Tax Court and ensuing briefs, the Tax Court ruled for the IRS (imagine that!) and sustained the income tax deficiencies proposed by the IRS audit, finding the losses claimed by the clients as being related to an “activity not engaged in for profit.” Fortunately, it was a “split decision” as the Tax Court ruled in favor of the clients by not sustaining the significant amounts of accuracy-related penalties also proposed by the IRS.
Despite this outcome, I found this case to have been for me an extremely interesting and stimulating exercise because I gained a vast amount of knowledge about the breeding, training, and showing of saddlebred horses, including the fact that Shelbyville, Kentucky and Shelby County, Kentucky are widely recognized as the “American Saddlebred Capital for the World.”
WHAT’S SOMETHING ABOUT YOU MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW?
As a high school senior in the Fall of 1964, I caught the winning touchdown pass against St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, resulting in my high school’s first-ever football victory against St. Xavier - - full disclosure, however, mandates that I add that it was the only pass reception for me during the game and I was undeniably the 3rd or 4th receiver target on the play!
WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU ON THE WEEKEND?
Involved in some capacity related to the numerous activities of my 4 exceptional grandchildren or simply enjoying watching on television a sporting event or Netflix movie or documentary.
IF YOU HAD ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO GIVE AN ATTORNEY JUST STARTING OUT, WHAT WOULD IT BE
